Description
The Lost World tells the story of Edward Malone, a young journalist who wants to impress his beloved by undertaking a dangerous mission. He joins an expedition led by the eccentric and controversial Professor Challenger, who claims that dinosaurs still live in a hidden part of the Amazon. Professor Summerlee, a skeptical scientist, and Lord John Roxton, a brave adventurer, also join the journey.
They travel deep into the Amazon rainforest and reach an isolated plateau cut off from the rest of the world by cliffs. There, they encounter living dinosaurs, including pterodactyls, iguanodons, and allosaurs. The explorers also face a tribe of ape-men, who capture them at one point. With bravery and strategy, they manage to escape, allying with a group of native people.
The expedition struggles to survive against prehistoric beasts and hostile conditions but ultimately escapes the plateau. Upon returning to London, the group presents undeniable proof of their discovery: a live pterodactyl. The novel ends with Challenger triumphant, his claims vindicated, and Malone reflecting on the adventure and its impact on his life.
The book blends science fiction, adventure, and exploration, and it inspired many later “lost world” stories, including films like Jurassic Park.
